Cloud 9 | "Barriers and Glimpses" | Nov-Dec 2020

Artist Residency Programme Commissioned by Eastcheap Projects (Supported by Arts Council England Lottery Funding)

PROJECT INFORMATION

'Barriers and Glimpses' was my part of the Cloud 9 series of residencies at Eastcheap Projects, Nov 2020 - Jun 2021. Utilising the time and space at Eastcheap Projects, I created a series of works utlising tracking data, visual effects, projection and three dimensional structures.

Wash Away

Tracing Paper, Video and Audio Projection | 16mins | 43 secs | 2020

'Drawing some inspiration from a sculpture by artist Robert Gober (1993-94 UNTITLED series) the concept behind this video installation uses similar references to the uncanny and hygiene but is also an exploration of another world only accessible by shrinking like the Antman or Alice (in Wonderland), enabling travel to places that would be impossible to reach under normal circumstances.

Using data from the digital capture of the motion of an object floating on water, the image of the sleeping artist appears to float and drift in and out of view in an apparently cavernous space beneath the opening of the vortex.'

The Gate

Tracing Paper | Green Screen Rig, Video and Audio Projection | 10 mins | 2020

A physical barrier doubles in use as the projection screen and as a means of limiting desired access to a space. The work features a traditional landscape scene with disruption occurring as a shadowy figure walks further in to the field. Perhaps this movement is toward a different realm in space or time where the physics are incompatible and begin clashing with our own world.

This work was created from two video sources that appear - from the outset - to be one. The landscape beyond the gate is throttled through ageing analogue equipment which slowly degrades the video creating a divergence between foreground and background. The shadowy figure surfs between these two states.
